Frequently asked questions about Enterprise Car Club.

What's the process when I get to the car?

Your personal Car Club membership card will open the car by holding your membership card over the card reader on the windscreen. You can also use the mobile app to unlock the vehicle. No keys are required to open the car.

You then type your PIN number into the in-car computer, which is in the glove compartment of the car. The keys will then be released from their storage area. You are then able to drive the car.

When you return to the car, you should return it to the same Car Club parking bay which you started the journey.

How old do I have to be to join?

Business use

For insurance purposes all business members must be over 20 years old. If users are aged 20 or under they cannot join as a business member but they are able to apply for personal membership.

You must have held a driving license for a minimum of 12 months. There is no upper age limit.

Personal use

If users are aged 20 or under, they are only able to apply for personal membership. For users aged 19 or 20, an additional insurance fee is charged. Members who are aged 19 and 20 must pay a compulsory £10 per month to contribute towards the considerably larger insurance premium that City Car Club incur for younger drivers but this comes with a reduced excess of only £250.

You need to be 19 years of age and also have held a full driving licence for a minimum of 12 months. There is no upper age limit.

Where can I park?

Car Club cars are picked up and returned to the same parking bay which is marked ‘Car Club’. Whilst using the Car Club cars in University managed car parks, the Car Club vehicle can be parked for free, according to the University's Parking Regulations.

How do I pay?

Business use

For business membership, all journeys are invoiced on a monthly basis to the Transport and Parking Office. Your department will be charged by journaling the costs on a monthly basis using the cost centre you provided at registration. A statement of your account will be emailed to each member’s line manager.

Personal use

For personal membership, a direct debit is set up with Enterprise Car Club and payment is then taken on a monthly basis when a journey is made.

Can I use Enterprise Car Club cars in other places in the UK?

Enterprise Car Club has the largest network of club cars across the UK. Once you become a member, you can have access to all cars, in any city in which they operate.

If I use the Car Club for a business journey, can I then also use it for a personal journey?

Separate bookings must be made for business and personal use of the Car Club. If you have booked a car for business use, this journey cannot be combined with a personal journey also. You can however book a business booking followed by a personal booking or vice versa.

Can I use the car for several days at a time?

Bookings for business use for more than one day are NOT recommended. A hire car should be arranged using one of the University’s approved suppliers. This will be cheaper than using the Car Club.

Car Club can offer a cost effective and convenient alternative to taxis or normal hire cars.

When deciding how to travel to a destination, walking, cycling and the use of public transport should be given priority. When this is not possible, consideration should then be given to car sharing using the University’s Tripshare scheme, taxi use or lastly using the Car Club.

It is recognised that it may not always be cost effective to use the Car Club and other modes of transport may be more appropriate for certain journeys. It is suggested as a rule of thumb that the Car Club is used where the car is in use for most of the time; it may not be so cost effective for a return trip involving just a few miles over several hours.
