Travelling to the King's Buildings

The King’s Buildings campus includes over 30 teaching and research buildings. It is home to the University’s College of Science and Engineering. The campus is located in the south of the city, about 30 minutes’ walk from the Central Area, and less than 15 minutes by bike from the city centre. It is well served by Edinburgh’s bus network.

The King’s Buildings are within easy cycling distance of the city's main transport hubs and other University campuses. It is well connected to the rest of the city by partially segregated cycle routes. It takes about 10 minutes to cycle from Central Area, and 15 minutes from Edinburgh Waverley train station.

The University provides a range of bike parking facilities across the King’s Buildings. These can be viewed on the map above by selecting the “Cycle Facilities” layer.


The King's Buildings site is located on the south side of the city and is extremely well served by bus. To plan your journey to the King's Buildings, try using the Traveline Scotland journey planner. The postcode for the King's Buildings is EH9 3JG.

The University runs a shuttle bus during term time between Central Area and King's Buildings. This is intended to provide a way for staff and students to rapidly travel between the two sites to meet their timetables. It is not intended as a primary means of commuting.

The A701 is one of the city's main bus routes and is only 5 minutes' walk from the King's Buildings campus. Alight at the stops at either Craigmillar Park or Liberton Road, then walk up Esslemont Road. The following buses serve this area:

Buses from further away

Intercity coaches terminate Edinburgh Bus Station, near St. Andrew Square. From here you can walk to either Leith Street or Princes Street to catch a bus along the A701 corridor, or a service 9 from Hanover Street (see above).

The King’s Buildings site is 2.5 miles from Waverley Station, which is the main train station in Edinburgh. To travel on to Kings Buildings from here, we suggest taking a bus (Lothian Bus services 3, 29, 31, or 37) or cycling.

Scotrail provide train services to/from the rest of Scotland. LNER run fast services to Newcastle, York, and London King’s Cross. For trains to other parts of the UK, check the National Rail website.

Edinburgh Tram services run from Edinburgh Airport to Newhaven, via the city centre and Leith. The closest stop to the King’s Buildings is Princes Street. From there you can take a bus to Kings Buildings (see above).


The King’s Buildings site is located on the south side in the city centre. Traffic congestion can be a problem, and parking is strictly controlled. We recommend against travelling by car unless it is essential for your journey.

There are several car parks located around the site, which are managed by the Parking Office. University car parks are for the use of permit holders only, and are subject to the University’s Parking Regulations. Permits are available for visitors to the University.

City of Edinburgh Council control on-street parking outside of the campus. Some nearby residential streets are covered by their Priority Permit scheme, which requires a resident's permit at certain times of day.

From June 2024, a Low Emission Zone (LEZ) will be enforced by the Council. The King's Buildings campus is not inside the LEZ, but you may need to drive through it when travelling to the site. Driving a non-compliant vehicle into the LEZ will result in a penalty charge notice.
