Commuter cycle training courses

The University's commuter cycle training courses run throughout the year and are available to all staff and students.

The course is aimed at people who are relatively new to cycling and wish to cycle to work or study, or more experienced cyclists who may find their confidence to be a bit shaky, especially after a long period of not cycling.

The course is designed and delivered by fully qualified Instructors from Cycling Scotland and aims to equip participants with a riding strategy that can be applied to any traffic situation that is encountered.

Commuter cycle training dates

Courses will run from 10am - 5pm and are delivered mainly on-road, but with some classroom based teaching.

Please note that you do need to provide your own bike for our cycle training courses.

  • Saturday 10th November 2012, 10am-5pm at The Centre for Sport and Exercise, 46 Pleasance
  • Saturday 24th November 2012, 10am-5pm at The Centre for Sport and Exercise, 46 Pleasance

I thoroughly enjoyed the course and would recommend it to anyone who commutes to work by bike. There was a good mixture of theory and practical teaching and I think that all levels of cyclist would benefit from this course...

Course outline

Cycling as part of the commute is one of the cheapest, healthiest ways of getting to work along with walking and it can considerably reduce your carbon footprint.

The one day course enables you to choose a suitable route to work, advises on clothing and bike choice and essentially, includes a practical session on riding on the road and in traffic.

The course covers the following:

  • the benefits of cycling to the University.
  • bike selection for commuting.
  • the Highway Code.
  • choice of commuting route.
  • cycling on the road.
  • what to wear and personal clothing strategies.
  • lights, security and how to carry things.
  • looking after your bike.
  • using a bike with other forms of transport.
  • useful cycling information.

I actually cycled out to my parents house and back on Sunday. It's only 15 miles altogether, but I would never have had the confidence to do it before. Definitely feel much better after doing the course!
